34th BG B-24 Original Crews and R/T codes

AS OF LATE APRIL 1944 ON ARRIVAL IN ENGLAND AT MENDLESHAM, STATION 156

Original Crews and B-24s distributed as follows as of May23, 1944:

4th Squadron        17 crews                 18 B-24s D/A-D/Q, and D/V

7th Squadron        18 crews                 19 B-24s E/A-E/S

18th Squadron      18 crews                 18 B-24s B/A-B/R

391st Squadron    17 crews                 17 B-24s L/A-L/Q

                                70 crews                 72 B-24s

The R/T codes on this list will vary to some degree from the list of codes as of May 23, 1944, the first combat mission, due to the loss of the original Tommy Thumper to accident and the transfer of three planes to the 486th BG and two planes to the 493BG, prior to the first mission on May 23rd. These losses and new replacements would have likely involved some other swapping of codes or pilots among the original planes and crews as well. To what extent that occurred is not certain. A complete copy of the Movement orders would reveal these changes. The six loses prior to the first combat were:

41-29562 lost to accident               Tommy Thumper (The original D/K and original plane of the Thrun crew.)

41-28871 transferred to 486BG as The Leading Lady (probably originally either B/K or B/L)

41-29564 transferred to 486BG as Queenie (probably the original B/Q as the B/Q code in the 34BG is the likely origin of the name Queenie. In the 486BG it was letter S)

42-94873 transferred to 486BG as Feudin' Wagon (probably originally either B/K or B/L)

41-28849 transferred to 493BG as Fightin' Rebel (probably the original E/A)

42-94851 transferred to 493BG as Big Dealer (probably the original E/G)

Unknown Original Squadron and R/T code

NOTE: 42-94811 is said to have been flown to England by the 34th BG CO, Wackowitz and was originally named Bottoms Up and was one of the two B-24s that had no assigned crew. When Pedigo wrecked Thrun's Tommy Thumper, Thrun took over the CO's plane, 42-94811 which was renamed Tommy Thumper II and took up the code D/K. Also, it would do well to note that three of the original crews had new pilots prior to the first combat mission: On Crew #2 Cook replaced Gray as pilot; on Crew #10 Halbert became Pilot where none is listed on the original crew list; and on Crew #66 Becker replaced Gillis as pilot.

?              42-94811                 Bottoms Up                           ORIG                                      CO, Wackowitz (renamed Tommy Thumper II, D/K)

?              ? (a CF)                  Little Joe                                ORIG                                      Flown to England by Staff Officers, no assigned crew (renamed and/or transferred)

?              42-94745                 The Bold Sea Rover             ORIG - May 30, 1944            May be Pedigo's orig. Cokey Flo, if so, then with 18th Sq. as B/C. Became D/A by May 23rd.

Bits & Pieces lists 42-94745 with both names, Cokey Flo & The Bold Sea Rover, which may be correct.

?              41-29548                 The Flying Devil                  ORIG - May 27, 1944            (D/V may not be original, but was D/V by May 23, 1944)

?              42-94845                 Miz-Pah                                 ORIG - May 29, 1944            (E/A by May 23, 1944 but probably not the original E/A)

ADDITIONAL NOTE: On July 24-25, 1944, there was a rather wholesale reshuffling of R/T codes and only a small handful of planes retained their original codes. After this date it is probably no longer possible to match up crews and planes using the R/T codes as a guide.

THOSE IN BOLD PRINT ARE CONFIRMED. Those in Italics are as generally accepted & match the pattern.

Crew #54 L/A       Ray                         Undecided

Crew #55 L/B        Isley                       (lost on their first mission, but were flying L/B The Dutchess when lost.)

Crew #56 L/C        Cliff                         The Dutchess

Crew #57 L/D        Bower                     (According to crewmember Dwight Bell, original plane was named Small Change. 2nd plane was Small Change II, 42-50585 which was L/G then L/D

and was flown several times after the change to L/D by the Bower crew, but only once while it was L/G.)

Crew #58 L/E       Culver                    Winnie the Pooh

Crew #59 L/F       Daniels                  Crow's Nest

Crew #60 L/G        Blair

Crew #61 L/H        Meyer

Crew #62 L/I          Smith, O. E.            (Only flew one plane, 42-94770 L/I before being lost on their 4th mission) The name, however, seems to go with the Erwin crew rather than Smith.

Crew #63 L/J        Foster                    Chesty

Crew #64 L/K       Baker                     The Hit Parade

Crew #65 L/L         Hanson, O. T.       Patches

Crew #66 L/M      Gillis                      Smitty (before combat began, Gillis was replaced by Becker as pilot. Becker had been CP on the O. E. Smith crew #62.)

Crew #67 L/N        Erwin                      Their original plane was named Sunshine Rose or perhaps Salutation Rose. There later NMF J, 44-40323 was Sunshine Rose.

Crew #68 L/O       Eastman                Wilson

Crew #69 L/P         Stewart                   The early missions show no regular so his original likely went to another pilot, or group. His regular plane was finally L/P but not until mid-June.

Crew #70 L/Q        Adams                   Lost on 4th mission, flew three on 42-94796 L/Q Me Worry? including the last one, interned in Sweden. Still, Me Worry? is also associated with the

Swenson crew, although they never flew it in combat.

NOTE: The Erwin crew flew its early missions in 42-94771 L/N, which would fit the pattern if that were Salutation Rose or  (Sunshine Rose #1) rather than 42-94770. Perhaps the error is in the serial number.
