B17G 43-38403 E/Z salvaged with battle damage at Lodz, Poland where it crash-landed following the 26-2-45 Berlin mission.

Command Pilot: YOUNG. 38 planes dispatched. 38 planes dropped 92.25 tons on the secondary target. 38 Credit Sorties. This was the first mission opposed by enemy fighters, but no losses occurred as a result. 34BG gunners did claim 3 enemy fighters destroyed, 2 probables and 8 damaged. Sturdivan in The Red-Tailed Devils from Mendlesham, p.75, states the claims as 8 destroyed, 7 probables and 5 damaged. Photos of the planes show that "Butch," "Ol'Buddy " and "Sweet Seventeen" each made one enemy fighter claim. Hal Province #1.

The tail came off the lower aircraft and half of the wing exploded, the two sections falling seperately. The upper aircraft lost a wing tip and spun out of control into the clouds. B-17G 43-38971 B/A Missing in Action Holswickede, Germany, flak and mid-air collision. This plane was hit by flak just after bombs away and three to four feet of the left wing tip was torn away. The plane peeled away from the formation to the left and collided with a B-17 from the 447BG.  That 447BG plane was in a three plane element flying with the 487BG that had been on a collision course with the 34BG on the bomb run. These three planes had also just released bombs and were peeling away when the collision occurred. Both planes crashed. Two chutes were seen but it uncertain from which plane they came. Crashed Hamm. B-17G 44-8605 B/H Homesick Angel Battle damaged by mid-air collision during mission in support of "Operation Varsity," the

American and British forces crossing of the Rhine River. With 18BS. Pilot: Bennett. The plane was salvaged 25-3-45.

March 25, 1945

3rd Air Division units, including the 34BG were recalled shortly after take-off due bad weather and the increasing possibility of adverse conditions upon return. Upon take-off one 34BG plane crashed near the base killing the crew of 9 airmen, according to Freeman, Mighty Eighth War Diary.

 

B-17G 44-8605 B/H Homesick Angel crashed shortly after take-off for the cancelled mission. (5 photos in the 26 March 1945 file.)
