Mid-air Collision over France at Mandres (Z-2691). See below.

 

Mission #136 March 4, 1945 B-17G 43-38338 B/M Collided with aircraft 071during assembly over France. One plane came down into the other from above. The tail came off the lower aircraft and half of the wing exploded, the two sections falling separately. The upper aircraft lost a wing tip and spun out of control into the clouds. One chute reported.  With 18BS. Pilot: Mueller. No Missing Air Crew Report. 8 Killed in Action.

NOTE:

Artruc was listed as pilot of this crew, first appearing on the crew lists for January 7, 1945. Shortly before their first combat mission, then Co-pilot, O’Brien, flew a few missions subbing on the Kennedy crew as Co-pilot. Mueller subs as Pilot with Artruc changed to Co-pilot on the crew’s first mission. By the second mission, Mueller is listed as the regular Pilot and Artruc as the regular Co-pilot. O’Brien becomes the regular Co-pilot of the Kennedy crew.
